Furthermore, the appearance of Belphagor certainly creates a strange limbo of bargaining and non-acceptance. With Jack's corpse walking and talking around, it's almost like having Jack back...if you turn your ears off and don't look at him directly.

Plus, with an intact body, there's the pie-in-the-sky possibility of getting Jack back.

Dean speaks with finality here, but that's just a smokescreen. He's rambling and trying to be strong and pragmatic, but what's actually going on is non-acceptance.

In the script of 15x01, we also see that despite their spiraling, Dean is clinging to Cas to fix things, a callback to the 14x18 Absence script, where Dean is angry for at Cas for telling him and not telling him.

But it's a unsolvable death. Cas can't fix it.

That's why Dean reacts so strongly when Jack's corpse is toast.

When Cas says, "It was destroyed," it's code for not just the Crook getting pulverized, but Jack's body itself getting destroyed. The real rupture is a slow-motion tear of them failing Jack in a variety of ways (about Dean failing to defeat Michael, Cas not talking about Jack's soul problem, TFW collectively not warning Mary of the dangers of soulless volatility, Cas sending Heaven after Jack, Sam and Dean locking Jack in the box, Dean and the Equalizer...and Cas destroying "the last hope"...Jack's body.)

Visually, as Cas delivers this news, a ghost streaks between them in the graveyard. It's a ice-cold shock of reality. (It's also why later, Dean can't talk about Jack, only "Bel," which is "code" for talking about Jack.)

Asmo sat in the cafeteria with his brothers chatting away, as Mammon and Beelzebub as usual helped him or did his make-up, while one of the other brother feeds him food, it was a regular thing and a bonding moment for the brothers, mostly Lucifer would help as well but he wasn't here, cause of a issue with "private photos and videos of the royal family" Lucifer seemed to be annoyed at this but reluctantly left, Myhilara and Isahine also chatting away helping each-other on studies as Odelia and Solielin were eating and maybe showing each-other how to make snacks from the huge amount of packaged snack given at the cafeteria. Aurmelle was gossiping with Deus as Mammon fed Beel and Asmo food while Beel did Asmo's make-up Belphegor sleeping on Odelia's lap, Aurelesia was also helping Belial, Lucifer and Diavolo (probably) in solving the issue, so she wasn't here. Rosealine, Leviathan and Raemous all playing on their Nintendos and drinking "Broken Skull" .

As everybody was doing their own things, everyone's phones started buzzing like crazy as Aurelesia entered the cafeteria and pulled Asmo out of the cafeteria, which made all the other MorningStars come-out and Aurelesia asked them question on where you were,

"When was the last time you saw Y/N?" Aurelesia asked hurriedly and concern painted on her face "Uhm, yesterday in the morning?" Asmo replied with doubt and confusion, as Lucifer also came running over his face white and pale and said,

"Y/N HAS BEEN KIDNAPPED!"

"WHAT?!" Asmo replied immediately with devastation and desperation,

Odelia immediately turned into her demon form and her eye's sclera turned black, she had always been protective and ever since she turned into a demon, she had been more protective than ever, you were a good friend and she immediately got to learn about everything according to your abduction, as others were also in their demon forms, all were angered and scared for you as some were around Xiokor interrogating the students to get clues, while Solielin was comforting Asmo as he tried to process the news of you being missing from yesterday afternoon...

After half-an hour, as Asmo was crying and hyperventilating when everybody gathered except Raemous and Beelzebub, as everyone patiently waited for them as the time ticked away everybody started getting impatient especially Lucifer. As everyone stayed there in quiet except Asmo's cries and heavy breaths. After a few moments, Raemous and Beelzebub came back, all tired and worried showing they couldn't find anything. As they were telling the emperor what they learnt the door flew off it's hinges as someone was thrown at the door. The person who bashed through the door ended up at Asmo's feet, they immediately scrambled to their feet, and bowed to Asmo's knees and apologized over and over..."Who are you?" Odelia asked the beaten up guy, turning into her demon form to protect in case of anything,

"He's the one who without any of your permission took private photos and videos and uploaded them to social media...." everyone turns their head to a familiar voice, as you entered the room dragging two other guys and throwing them near the royals' feet.

"APOLOGIZE TO THEM!" You demanded loudly, making the three guys scramble to their knees and shivers as their bow their heads to the floor apologizing over and over again, as their kept their heads down apologizing Asmo felt his blood boil as his demon form started to emerge, now before anyone could do anything, Asmo pounced on the men and for once Asmo scared everybody more than Belial, Lucifer or Diavolo...

Even after the three eldest and you tried holding Asmodeus back, it wasn't happening, until the late emperor knocked Asmodeus out and the three men were arrested...

As Asmodeus woke up, in his pretty sunset orange mauve, pink and purple room with you beside him, you were sitting on the chair while leaning forward to hold his hand as you slept in the uncomfortable position, Asmo slowly cupped your face and gently slapped you in revenge for making him angry and worry, but careful as to not wake you. As he slowly calmed down and shook you awake. As you grumbled, rubbed your eyes, you wiped your face and yawned as you removed sleepiness from your system. You immediately became at his service, apologizing for behaving badly in front of him, asking him if he was okay, and letting him know what was going o around. Later as Myhilara walked through the hallway towards Asmo's room to check on his condition, what she was Beelzebub, Belphegor, Solielin, Isahine, Satan, and upon peeking inside Lucifer, Odelia, Zional, Ezoliana, Belial, Aurelesia, Aurmelle, Mammon, Raemous, Diavolo, Herverlia and many others taking photos of you and Asmo who were sleeping in each other's embrace very cozily. And GOD, it took Myhilara all the restrain in the world to not yell at the people for disturbing them...But guess they did look cute and they wouldn't mind some more blackmail photos, would they????

✿ Now that this has happened, prepared to be teased by him all the time, he will rile you up so you would be angry and then when you stop him he gets all pouty and tries to stop you from doing anything!

✿ Now you're a S/O of THE Asmodeus, the avatar of Lust and a royal, so you are quite famous and being famous includes being fashionable and dressing nice, I mean look at everyone in the MorningStar household or everyone from the MorningStar court, they're all wearing very fashionable clothing i very formal and lavish styles, and if you can't stay on top of trends, Asmo, Mammon, Aurmelle and Beelzebub, the fashionistas of the house are there. One thing they look for in your outfit, is cutesy and shy dressing style but one where you can easily beat up people! Cause it's free entertainment for them!

✿ Asmo is also really good at knife throwing and so he taught you to throw things so you could hit your targets even if they are running away from you, he mostly uses Leviathan as the target for throwing things like his make-up brush which is very heavy because it's made with some type of rare stone.

✿ He always patches you up and then he cuddles against you, and the medicine he uses though take up a long time to heal as compared to other medicines of Infernal, but other medicines have very heavy side effects and sometimes the bruises don't actually disappear and so Asmodeus's medicines does exactly that!

✿ He also finds you being able to fight despite your exterior especially sexy, don't ask why, he has also found it sexy when the person is the opposite of what they look like...

✿ Asmo would always cheer you on the sidelines when you fight and if they try to touch your face, they WILL face his wrath and nobody wants that in this world....

Belphegor MorningStar

◈ Belphegor is is the one who is most likely to date you, you're so nice and cute and shy and what not, he melts in your embrace and now most people wouldn't suspect anything form you two, probably....

◈ Belphegor honestly wouldn't expect things like fighting from you considering you're very shy and horribly sweet like candy, it's like he will get diabetes, it's okay, he likes that kindness and shyness. He honestly expects things like this from Mammon, Lucifer or Raemous's S/Os and so it's not very something people see coming...

◈ Belphegor is always ready to fight anyone who tries to hurt you and he does exactly that does not matter that he's the second youngest brother of the family, he will be beating people who do any funny stuff to you.

◈ Toxic best-friends, horrible family, rude barista, abusive relationships with anyone before, he is always there to take revenge for you, cause that's how my baby is with his S/O, he strives to make his S/O the most happiest person out there without thinking anything negative about themselves. And so honestly, it wasn't that you weren't able to fight, you just didn't because Belph fought people for you before you!

Belphegor was feeling your hands tightly wrap the bandages around his hands; on his knuckles, leaving his nimble and pretty fingers exposed as he stared at his twin, Beel chomping on something like always with one of his hands, tuning his guitar with his tail and his other hand. Solielin, Beel's girlfriend and one of your best friend, was being trained by him, she was lifting a shit ton of weight on her feet and as she did her headstand, her forearms shaking, Beel looked at her and smiling and then going back to whistling, tuning his guitar and eating.

Belphegor stood up sighing, slapping Beel's head, "She'e your girlfriend and she's getting tired, about time you life off some of the weight from her..." Belph said, smirking as Beel scoffed and pouted immediately stood up and lifted off all the weight as Solielin got back on her feet, smiling and thanking the twins. Belph, waved it off and gave her some water as Solielin sat beside you, Beel and Belph both going in one of the rings, when Solielin used magic to lift the very huge hammer and banged the huge gong.

The twins immediately lunged at each-other, as they fought, making sure not to hit on their face or private parts. As the twins fought, with intricate patterns of trying strike, kick, grapple and to hit each-other's pressure points as the other dodged, "It's a Indian martial fight, called Kalaripayattu." Solielin said as she smiled, you remember training this with her. "In this art-style people use their body to hit their opponents pressure point!!" You gave rest of the explanation while Solielin giggled as she brushed her hair behind her ears from her bun. Solielin always loves to teach something new to someone and you were always the one who listened to her. When she said she wanted to try kalaripayattu, because both her best-friend and her boyfriend and the royal men knew how to do it, she was super curious and she thought it would be a good way to let out steam, stress and anything that was bothering her, Kalaripayattu could be done by anyone, regardless of gender and age, but since she had no one to learn from, mainly cause she was so scared of telling the men that she had no previous experience in fighting, so she came to you because you knew how to fight and she asked you to train her and you both started training together!

Suddenly the deafening sound of the gong rang in the Siofra Hall. You and Solielin and the other royals who were in the Siofra Hall also covered their ears the sound causing a strong wind to disperse around the huge Hall, making both Beel and Belph tumble and thrown off balance, in middle of the fight.

As the wind dispersed, the sounds of laughter were heard from Lucifer and Mammon, as one of Diavolo's hand was glowing red as he used to magic to hit the gong. Diavolo smirking, watching the twins tumble off balance, as he apologized as Belph and Beel began their fighting again. Diavolo sat beside you, you three stood there and watched the twins fight, While Lucifer and Mammon fought in another ring.

As you stared intently, you thought about how strong Diavolo was to bang the gong so hard that a wind strong enough to knock a person off their feet when they're fighting..

"Well I'm quite strong and that's also because I train my magic quite often, but I lift the hammer on my own as well!" As if Diavolo said you were spooked out of your thoughts when you remembered that Diavolo can read human's minds. "Do you want to train with me a bit?? I can turn into a human for a few minutes while we fight as to not kill you!" Diavolo said as he tied his long red hair into a ponytail as he asked you with his black sclera eyes, gleaming a bit.

You nodded your head. As you, Solielin and Diavolo stood up as Solielin said, "Babe, I'm going upstairs to check the above rings for a bit!!" She told Beel who nodded his head in acknowledgement as he continued to fight and throw his twin brother across the ring. You, Solielin and Diavolo following you both, walked up the stairs and reached the rings on the above floor, there were two parts of Siofra hall, the downstairs part where around 14 rings were located and upstairs part where seven rings were located in front of the gong.

Diavolo in the beginning did stretches and exercises with you to warm-up, and then began teaching you both on how to sweep a person off their feet, literally, he taught you both on how to pick someone up and throw them with using least amount of energy and all that jazz. Until, Diavolo asked you to come to the ring with him as to how he could show you both how to throw someone off, he obviously wasn't gonna hurt you so he turned into a human for a few seconds, a human who wouldn't die if a hammer was dropped on their head. As you and Diavolo stood in the yellow part of the ring, you turned to look down at down stairs part, where Lucifer, Mammon, Belph and Beel weren't present anymore.

You thought, 'Hmm, they must be taking a break now, they have been fighting for a long time now!' when suddenly someone's hand was on your shoulder and as a reflect from your annoying bullies, enemies and fighting experience, you held the wrist of the person and hurled them into the gong which made a huge sound..As you hurled them, you saw their red eyes and realized that person was Diavolo, yet you couldn't stop his fall now and so out of surprise and fear you and Solielin yelled loudly. Diavolo banged into the gong, head first and slopped down as he let out a groan of pain. As you were about to go near Diavolo to apologize and help him, you were suddenly pulled into warm arms, as you were pushed into the person's shirt you smelled them and realized it was Belph.

"ARE YOU OKAY?!" Belphegor asked you with concern and worry written on his face as he cupped your cheeks and moved your head right and left to check for bruises, then he got down on his knees and checked everywhere else. As Beel checked up Solielin, Mammon was hiding his laugh as he and Lucifer helped up Diavolo, who was frozen. Lucifer tried to hide his laugh which he was good at, but he couldn't say the same for Mammon, who snorted every two seconds, Lucifer slapped him on the back of his head three times to stop..

Later as you were apologizing to a laughing Diavolo, who had already forgiven you, while Belphegor looked at that recording of you throwing Diavolo on repeat as he stared at the camera recording with heart-eyes like he was love-sick... It was really hot...

◈ Now the moment he saw you throw the literal creator of their realm, Diavolo across the room and on the end of the huge gong where he ended up crashing and making a dent into the metal gong, he realized he is probably like either a flightless mosquito who is trying to continuously bite you or a new born kitten to you....hopefully the latter..

◈ And now, you're constantly asked to spar with Lucifer, Diavolo, Mammon and basically everyone else to have fun around, if you're up for it actually, don't worry it's all in good fun you're a part of the MorningStar court family now!

◈ He will brushes around incense sticks around your head to bless you before a fight and then will slap your enemy and threaten them saying that if they hit your pretty face or neck or something happens, they will face him next and keep in mind, he doesn't forgive!

◈ Belphegor is always on the sidelines cheering you on and teaching you new ways to fight, always training you and training with you. You spar regularly with him, until he gets tired after three fights and wants to sit down then Beelze is the one whom you spar with on the regular!

◈ Belph is always waiting for you with a smile after a fight, he knows you'll win and if you don't, he on the sidelines eating his popcorn and soda, hell drop them in an instant and fight the person, does not matter who it, he will fight everyone, including his family and Diavolo, but he preferred if that didn't happen, he's very much loving of his family.

as far as season premieres go, this one is... okay? i thought we were getting zombie apocalypse and i got weird boring daytime ghosts. bloody mary is THEE scariest episode of spn but man, spn forgot how to make stuff scary somewhere along the way because the ghosts in this episode just look... like cosplayers who got lost

but that being said the PATHOS in this episode gives me some good fucking food. the way that cas is SO very careful with jack's body. like. that's his KID. and he had to watch him die. and he couldn't do anything. and it was his dad that killed him. and this is cas losing the very last bit of his faith. and cas smiting things will never cease to be amazing. but we're concentrating on the SAD here.

cas' "well i wouldn't starve" is SO VERY BITCHY. and he has every right to be at this point.

dean is doing an AWFUL lot of hindsight declarations. first he always knew that jack would go bad and then he always knew that chuck would go bad. he is very conveniently rewriting his own history and it is a very interesting choice for him to make.

cas lifts that giant slab of stone above his head and all i can do is have a dean winchester "SO STRONG" moment. (so STRONG!)

cas having to watch a demon parade around wearing the corpse of his kid is... he is literally going through one of the worst experiences of his life. and sam and dean are pretty much completely ignoring it and telling him to suck it up and get over it. and then he's ORDERED to give up his blood. cas is no longer "always happy to bleed for the winchesters" and you know what? HE'S RIGHT!

this is why the divorce arc is SO necessary (in my opinion). cas has reached a point where he has NO autonomy with the winchesters. dean, and to an extent sam, are treating him like a soldier--like how john treated them. they're giving him orders and expecting him to obey them. cas has lost EVERYTHING--his son, his family, his faith--and sam and dean don't acknowledge his loss or his pain. they expect him to get over it and do his job--follow their orders. and that is why it is so VITAL that cas leave.

cas' pain being so much that he can't even stand to be in the car with dean and belphagor... he is HURTING! he is in TRAUMA! (and i guess everyone else is too but cas is the only one who is visibly showing it, other than dean making a "whoopsie" statement in the crypt)

good to know that cas doesn't need to touch people to heal them. he just does that for dean because dean is ✨special✨. and when it comes time to fix sam cas is like "ew yucky" and makes sure to keep a good five inches between his hand and sam's body

though cas being pissy because sam shot him is fun. see, that's why cas doesn't touch you when he heals you, sam. all i can think about in this scene watching cas run is misha running on his shitty old man hips and his brand new shiny titanium hips

and then belphagor mocking cas over dean's treatment over him... dean not being able to keep himself from coming to cas but immediately forcing himself away... AH IT'S SO PAINFUL. i love it.

Rowena and Ketch...Destiel mirrors?

So this was interesting, something I definitely didn't pick up on before:

15x02, Ketch shows up and he pow wows with Sam, Dean, and Rowena.

Right away, it's apparent that not only is there a little something something between Rowena and Ketch but they also have history. An antagonistic one. And one that seems to imply that Rowena may owe Ketch a sort of debt for letting her escape.

In this scene you'll notice that Dean gets beers for everyone. He hands two to Ketch, and Ketch in turn places one before Rowena. She studies it and tells Dean she'd much rather have some Scotch. Ketch compliments her and brings up their history. After the tension picks up as Sam and Dean awkwardly watch, Belphegor!Jack shows up.

Ketch says he was contracted to kill Belphegor but in light of things, he's not going to focus on that.

Sam: "Who told you that?"

Ketch: "An attractive female demon named--"

Belphegor immediately knows who he's referring to. Sam tells Ketch not to kill Belphagor because they need him and Dean adds "For now". (which is interesting because it's been Cas who has been gung ho about getting rid of Belphagor and getting him out of Jack's body & the argument Sam is making is the one Dean was making up until this point)

Then after the Chuck and Amara scene, we see one of the townspeople giving Cas a hard time because people have gone missing. "You said you'd keep us safe." Cas is affected by this but walks away.

The next time we see Dean is right after this scene. He's walking with Rowena out of the war room. She starts asking about Ketch and Dean's not having it. After reminding her they're in a crisis, he tells her "Find yourself another boy toy. You don't want to get involved with Ketch" before going back into the room. This doesn't put Rowena off in the slightest.

The immediate next scene is the "real" conversation Dean and Cas have, where Cas once again is trying to restore Dean's faith, in themselves.

Cas: "Dean, you asked what about all of this is real. We are."

The very next scene we get:

Not only do Ketch and Dean have similar positioning and are now matched when Dean insists he put the iron necklace on but compared to what we see later in 15x09:

It's interesting that Ketch and Rowena both bring each other up to Dean and no one else.

Ketch: "Tell me about the witch."

Dean: "Oh, come on. What is it with you two?" Then Dean gets a text that interrupts the moment. "Two hunters haven't checked in."

Which brings me to another "torturer/torturee relationship" we see a glimpse of in 15x09:

Sam and Eileen have history, sure, but it didn't start out like Ketch's and Rowena's did. A little antagonistic in the very beginning for the two seconds Eileen didn't know who Sam was, but other than that it's been completely different.

The same episode the couple has their own "real" talk:

Eileen: "I don't know what's real and what's not."

Sam: "I know that was real."

We all already know about this parallel and we all also already know that Sam and Eileen share several parallels with Dean and Cas this season.

But what's interesting to me here is that they also share another important parallel:

Sam brings Eileen back to life in 15x06.

Cas brought Dean back to life in 4x01.

A solid parallel. They could have made Sam go to Rowena in Hell to get the spell or call Cas for any knowledge of the spell he might have. He could have involved Dean in some way (I know there were bts reasons for Dean's mostly absence but I'm talking about the story itself) or asked another hunter or witch. But no, he himself goes to Rowena's place to get the spell, the ingredients, etc.

So what does this have to do with Ketch and Rowena, you ask?

Because Dean is literally being mirrored by Ketch in this episode, from physical looks to physical positioning (& their movements are in sync), they both write on the board/study the map on the wall (similar actions) in the war room, even right down to the scene where the ghosts attack them before being saved by Kevin. Ketch is thrown first, then Dean.

And it's ironic that later when Ketch and Rowena are getting hot and heavy with the flirting, Dean is the one to call and interrupt them. Then Francis, a former flame of Rowena's, ends up possessing Ketch. Dean shoots Ketch in the left shoulder to get Francis out of him. Dean talks to Ketch before they take him away and Rowena sees him off (while Cas and Sam are off having their own conversation). Literally, Dean, Rowena, and Ketch are connected this entire episode.

And we get the image of Rowena and Cas standing together, watching the souls still flying out of the Hell rift. Rowena, an ancient witch, and Cas, a billions-years-old angel. Literally standing side by side.

Then we go into 15x03 and we see Stevie who will become instrumental for Alt!Charlie in 15x18. We know this episode is the beginning of the three act/episode arc for Dean and Cas under Berens' hand. But we also get (minus the "breakup" scene) Ketch's death and Rowena's death.

After Rowena tells the team what they need and Dean decides for Cas to go to Hell with Belphagor:

Cas: "Well, it sounds like I don't have much of a choice."

Dean: "Good. Great." *turns and looks at Rowena* "Go team."

Right after this, we get Ketch's death scene. Where his heart is ripped out of his body by the "attractive female demon" he had been hired by that he mentioned the past episode.

Then we see after Cas and Belphegor go to Hell (where Bel makes the statement that Cas could die forever or get stuck in Hell - aka foreshadowing), Stevie arrives and hands things to Dean and Rowena.

Where am I getting at?

Someone who was from a former unfinished hunt aka the past.

And for Cas' death, we have him sacrificing himself to save Dean (which also by extension also contributes to saving the world):

Still seriously freaked out at the possibility that it might have been Jack alive for a few seconds before Cas determined it was Belphagor trying to play a trick on him. Like what if Jack made a deal with Billy and the Empty and it just wasn’t shown?? The demon could’ve still had a hold on Jacks vessel which is what Cas saw, and Jack’s could’ve been about to cast him out..

ALSO why did Rowena destroy her only means of resurrecting?? Assuming she came back to life with ALL of the souls of hell INSIDE of her. (assuming she didn’t explode) SHE WOULD HAVE ALL OF THAT POWER AND COULD PROBABLY KILL OR SERIOUSLY MAIM CHUCK. OR wouldn’t she be able to use her knowledge of magic and cast the spirits out of her like into Lucifer’s cage or just in general out of her into Hell somewhere and use her Magic to get top side before they kill her????

Okay let’s think about deans other special guy friends. Do you think any of them could have coaxed dean out of the closet at all, especially if situations were slightly different? Crowley could not have, I think Benny couldn’t have for similar reasons because the “this is wrong because this is a guy” is compounded (heh) by “this is wrong because this is a monster”. Idk how you feel about Lee but I think if they were a thing he probably had a similar disease to dean so they enabled each other. Tangential relatated maybe but I think belphagor could have gotten it if he used a non jack male body b cause dean was feeling so low and dean woulld know on some level that would hurt cas but like. That’s not gonna change how dean percieved himself.

I feel like if Victor lived and they had stayed associates and truly become friends maybe something could have happened there because Victor is like. The most normal guy deans ever had a homoerotic friendship with. All this is reliant on Victor being willing to like. Hold deans hand’s through his issues which is unlikely imo but if dean was ever going to like. Experiment. Pre-hell would probably be the time he’d do it and he definitely had some moments in season 3 where he was more open with people who Weren’t Sam. Idk. Thoughts?

if dean was going to have a normal gay relationship where he learned to be normal about being gay, it would be with benny, imo. like benny and dean don’t really have a work relationship they’re just. guys who know each other. like they started out as comrades in arms but now they’re just guys who know each other. and also dean was idealizing benny pretty hard in s8, if they’d managed to get into a relationship before dean snapped on him he would have followed benny’s lead. this is why deanbenny is both interesting (because it’s unique) and deeply boring (because it’s just a normie relationship). i’m interested in the character development dean could get from it but not the relationship itself.

i don’t think victor henriksen could have Been That for dean because they couldn’t have had like. a normal relationship. it would have been insane and secretive because victor would have basically been like. the winchesters’ mole, in the fbi. like they’re still wanted serial killers. and that’s a very interesting relationship dynamic that could end up with seasons of tension, but it’s not conducive to a healthy re-evaluation of self-concept. also i think victor is a mess too like, he has a string of angry ex-wives. like dean/victor is honestly more fun if victor is in himself kind of a fucked up guy. i think that’s something they relate to each other over: being a fucked up guy.

some day when i finish my secret good season seven post i’ll get you all in on my season seven dean/victor agenda and we can get victor and a post-lisa dean talking shit about “ex wives” together (even more fun because dean is a misogynist who WIPED LISA’S MEMORY so the whole conversation has a very unsettling undertone that victor doesn’t know about and would be horrified by if he knew. it may be kind of sexy that dean is definitely a serial killer (even if victor is convinced it’s in a good cause) but there’s some things that are just too fucked up).

like, i’m very into the idea that dean and victor have a relationship that is very much premised on being similar people. like, bonding over both being intensely lonely and emotionally repressed Married To The Job types. like they’re partners in work as well as play, you know? which is fun but i don’t think they’re going to applebees for date night i think they’re going ghost hunting for date night. which on the one hand is fun but on the other it means dean doesn’t have to reconcile himself with holding hands with a man in an applebees.

we DESERVED a scene in the middle of the ghost apocalypse where cas and dean are off scouting outside and belphagor is like “so what’s the deal with those two? are they going to get back together, dean and that boy with the goofy name?” 

sam: “well, that’s a difficult question. i think it’s fair to say ... no. not a chance. no way. not in a million years. oh, and never.” 

belphagor: “but dean’s so strong and handsome and honestly had such an art to his .. you know, down in hell. i mean if you go for that sort of thing.” 

and then rowena is like “let me break it down for you belphy” and she and sam stand up and are like “oh dean. i’m an angel and you’re the righteous man how could it ever be?” in her best cas voice while sam is like, in his fake dean voice, “oh cas, i love you so much i almost forgot to repress all my emotions” and they keep going back and forth until dean and cas walk back in and catch them

The Further Folklore of Supernatural

Here’s a little more folklore meta in light of how season 15 has been playing out if anyone is game. I genuinely thought that Moriah would be the end of the folklore stuff and tossed out “Folk the Author” as an “epilogue,” so this is probably less of an addendum than it is a waymarker as I try to continue to parse these themes into the last seven episodes.

Welp. *waves hands at everything* THIS is not how anyone expected 2020 to go. Things got a little bit big and I stopped thinking about Spn in light of needing that energy elsewhere. But I also don’t want this crapfest to ruin how I fan my favorite show, so here I go again. I will attempt a TL;DR, too!

If you’ve read my old “folklore” analysis here about how I think fairy tales and all their baggage fit into Supernatural season 14, you know that I believe Castiel has stepped into a Sleeping Beauty type story, and that coincidentally a few themes and symbolism from Snow White kept popping up around Dean. (I hold Sam to be a Protagonist in the modern “literary fiction” sense of the word, but emotionally, thematically, and narratively he’s always been a little inaccessible to me. I finally understood him when the death-of-the-author plot surfaced, and I’ll get to Sam eventually here. And Jack, there’s a little Jack in here, too.) 

If you would rather have the TL;DR than read several thousands of words about how folklore and myth *might* be abstractly connected to an American genre show, all I can say is that I tried. The textual support is all in the folklore posts. This is as succinct a summary as I could fabricate. At least I’m not gonna talk about Sam and bricolage and freeplay! This is an almost completely theory-free post! If you don’t want to read or don’t need a refresher and just want to know how this has been working in 15, you can scroll down to “END OF TL;DR”.

So, to catch up, I’m not talking about the folklore and mythology that this show has always relied on for plot and MOTWs. I wasn’t drilling down into urban legends like Hook Man or world folk monsters like shtrigas or pishtacos. By “folklore” I mean the study of storytelling tropes and tale types that have been with us for ages. One of the many subtexts of the end of the series. I’ve been tracking this because I think it’s fun to see how fairy tale imagery and mythology might layer preconscious suggestions into the text of the show. I personally think it was loud enough to be seen easily, but more than likely viewers felt unsettled, felt cheered, or felt like they knew what was coming? I’m curious to know. Anyway.

When we found out that Kelly Kline was going to name her baby “Jack” waaaaay back in season 12, things started chiming. Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack the Giant Killer. Jack Tales. Jack is a powerful Western character, sort of a cross between a noble hero and a trickster, featuring in stories that often blur lines and boundaries. He is both the poor man’s youngest son and the equal to King Arthur’s heir. Jack is both everyman and extraordinary. Jack is so cool, I wish I had more time to parse that but his qualities are not subtle in the text/subtext, anyway.

But back to my half-crack reading of seasons 14 and 15. 

Once upon a time in Supernatural, there were two fairy tales being told. Both fairy tales are found all over the world and in many forms, but they all can be grouped together because they all contain shared elements of the same basic plot or shared themes, and these two in particular are sister stories. So when I mention “Sleeping Beauty,” I’m talking about lots of different versions of the folk tale, and the same for “Snow White,” which can be found in one form or another in storytelling traditions all over the place. It is both helpful and irritating that these are both Disney movies, too.

Jack makes an allusion to Sleeping Beauty in 14x03 The Scar while talking to Castiel-- it’s the kind of subtextual flash that in and of itself means little and proves nothing, but then beginning with The Scar we got three stories in a row that dealt with “sleepers” of some sort-- Lora in 14x03 doomed to die because of a witch’s spell, Stuart in 14x04 Mint Condition in a coma because of a ghost attack, and Sasha’s father in 14x05 Nightmare Logic under the spell of a clever djinn. It’s powerful subtext, like a soft light that bathes these episodes in the color of fairy tale and makes Jack’s Dramatic Swoon at the end of Optimism all the more Dramatic-- subtext amplifying the plot. Jack goes to Heaven, but is eventually cornered by the Shadow, who wants him in the Empty where he will sleep forever-- the Shadow being an entity who has claimed the husks of dead angels since their inception and thus implies a “curse” laid on Jack from the moment he came into being-- but Castiel, who is ever a thief in oh so many ways, makes a bargain with the Shadow and essentially takes over the consequences of Jack’s Sleeping Beauty story (hence my rarely used but hilarious tag “Castiel Thief of Endings.”)

Now that we know from 14x20 Moriah that the Shadow and Billie the Reaper are, if not allies, at least working together when Jack is awakened in the Empty, does that mean that Castiel’s deal is still on the table, or has that fate been thwarted? *pounds table* Was Jack’s death and Chuck’s rise as a “greater threat” in 14x20 enough to shift Castiel’s ending? It’s the kind of subtextual question that lends tension to the narrative and it’s what I am here for. 

Well, speaking of thwarted expectations, Dean’s arc was being shadowed by a Snow White tale type. We all know Snow White but why don’t I sum it up anyway, since Disney messed up the folktale ending lol. Snow White is cast out of her home by her jealous stepmother (and echoes of the stepmother’s magic mirror show up in 15x02 Gods and Monsters) who sends her huntsman to kill her; the dude can’t do it and turns the girl loose in the forest instead. Snow White joins a band of outsiders who live in the forest-- in the Disney movie and the Grimms’ tale they are dwarfs, in some versions she happens upon a band of robbers-- and they love her very much and we presume she’s safe for the rest of her life; Michael mysteriously turns Dean loose to join Sam’s gathering of hunters, however we know, like Stepmom, Michael is still out there. The stepmother finds out that Snow White is actually alive and contrives to kill her herself. Eventually succeeding, Snow White appears to die and is usually laid to rest in a crystal casket/glass coffin. Her stepmother’s machinations have _stolen her agency_ (further paralleling Dean’s possession by AU!Michael.) A Handsome Prince stumbles upon Snow White, is besmitten with her, and he asks her protectors if he can have her, as one does. Leaving the Disney adaptation aside, Snow White awakens when whatever item that has caused her death-like state is dislodged (piece of apple in her throat) or removed (magic corset) or withdrawn (poisoned hairpin) by her protectors. Snow White is a story about the community of the dwarves of band of robbers or adopted family caring deeply for her, and when Dean starts making his own crystal casket, the ma’lak box, in which he will ride out eternity in tormented symbiosis with Apocalypse Michael, he has to rely on his family to help him see the plan through. However, here’s where Jack-- who is as much a chaos engine as his surrogate father Castiel if not more so-- steps in and ruins the ending. Jack smites Michael. Dean Winchester is saved. Again. To put the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, Jack later destroys the ma’lek box entirely. 

That was quite the surprise ending… for one of the stories.

Was the end of season 14 the end of the Sleeping Beauty theme, also?

END OF TL;DR

I quit writing about “folklore” for a while, but that doesn’t mean it stopped being a theme. It just stopped being fun to write about as the story got more and more dark, and when it transmuted into two parallel themes of “folklore” or storytelling by the people versus Death of the Author--or storytelling by a lauded authority-- and there was so much angst about the boundaries of Chuck’s powers, I just wanted to sit back and enjoy that. I did distill my thoughts about Sam’s new arc in the DotA plot, which I thought would subsume the folktale themes but hey, we still have folktales around, too. I mean, we have Sam and we have Dean, and we have two “literary” subtexts, or maybe rather two subjects about the nature of story, something that I thought was a little bit of a surprise.

Storytelling was a Feature of 15x07 Last Call, both in the sense that Lee and Dean swap new stories and tell old tales of their adventures together as they catch up, but also in the sense that we got additional “text”-- hints of a backstory where John and Dean hunted with Lee in that swampy long-ago “Stanford era,” and again we get storytelling when _Lee recounts how he ended up keeping a marid in his basement_. There is also an allusion to the Thousand and One Arabian Nights in that episode that I yelled about in a meta that I never put on the interwebs, but the “marid” is in a specific tale in many editions of that collection, and thus calls in not only a different folktale tradition but the concept of a framed/nested narrative, which I believe will be important to understanding the last episodes of the series, but that’s an aside. In 15x08 Our Father Who Aren’t In Heaven, Castiel _tells Michael the story_ of how everyone ended up where they are now to convince him to help. And Michael and Adam’s allyship, if not friendship, was probably the best subversion of any “storytelling” expectation we’ve ever had on this show. Belphagor set us up for “room full of crazy” or something, but, no. We got symbiosis. 

That almost sums up how I’ve been viewing the last “era” of spn. This wasn’t in the master post, but I shouted a lot about underworlds before 15x09 Purgatory 2: Return to Purgatory, and then stopped shouting because I had to ferment for a while. Also, as has been mentioned, the world turned to crap. But talking to other meta writers during the ramp up to the resumption of the season helped me realize just why this reading of myth to folktales to literature feels so right.

Underworlds and Otherworlds…. Everybody has crossed into an “underworld” or three in Supernatural, it’s really nbd. It was actually surface-level plot in season 13. By the time 15x09 rolled around, our heroes are just, like, strolling in and out of “sealed off” Hell after doing a level one spell and chilling with Billie in the Empty and even that Purgatory trip didn’t have the same feeling of danger that, say, crossing into the AU did. But also, we’re at the point where subtext is leading us to a _satisfactory_ ending. Where before we had serial text, like a cumulative tale type-- “The House that Jack Built”-- which just kept adding more and more plot, we’re hurtling o’er the apex of Freytag’s pyramid now and things are getting loud.

But they’re also getting very shifty.

I wrote a little bit about Sam Winchester successfully reviving Eileen in 15x06 Golden Time and the “Orpheus and Eurydice” symbolism of him keeping his back to her. (I’m not linking it because it’s so, so rough.) But because Sam is not an underworld hero, not completely-- I see him as a modern Protagonist coming to terms in a psychoanalytical model with things like mortality, fallibility, and mastery-- maybe bildungsroman, even -- he was able to subvert the tragic ending of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice because it is not “his” story. But if I were pressed to find a mythic or folk tale type to measure Sam against, I could. I would probably sideye “the sorcerer’s apprentice” trope (ATU 325-The Magician and his Pupil :D ) which began as a poem that entered European folklore on different fronts. (and weirdly, that story was also Disnified in Fantasia. That’s probably more my own limitation as a gen x american lol than anything coming from the writer’s room.)

Dean got his moment in Purgatory where he was able to finally come to grips with his anger and heal the rift between himself and Castiel because Purgatory is a different kind of underworld. Dean is a successful threshold-crosser, having crossed that boundary out of Purgatory before, but in 15x09, his prayer to Castiel is all a subtextual evocation of doing the emotional and mental work of therapy, which Sam, as a modern protagonist, is usually caught up in. The mythic hero also deals with mortality, failibilty, and mastery, but in different terms. I hope I’m doing an okay job peeling apart these nuances that I’m seeing.

Since Castiel accompanied Dean to Purgatory, and in the past made his own wildly successful incursion into and out of Hell with Dean’s soul, and was the one in The Trap who actually retrieved the Leviathan blossom, Castiel counts as an underworld hero, too, but you can pull the lever and send the tumblers spinning again and make him a fairy tale character in that he has made this Bargain with the Empty which is both in the “modern” tradition of subverting a fairy tale, and the tale type “deal with the devil.” Or he could be seen as a modern protagonist in that he’s lowkey grappling with questions of selfhood and identification. “I am an angel of the lord.” “I am no one.” “It’s Steve, now.” “You are nothing.” “I am an angel.”

We even got an episode that playfully explored the concept of “hero” by subverting our expectations (Sam and Dean were rescued by, of all people, an upgraded Garth.) It was called The Hero’s Journey, after the Joseph Campbell book about mythic heroes.... !!! Like, what??? !!!! I didn’t even have anything to say about that episode, it just rocked. The “meta” was just all out there in plot, like the olives and boiled eggs in a 1950’s gelatin recipe. 

Some of this slipperiness in the subtext points right at the study of folklore and the (admittedly Eurocentric at first) efforts to transform a “soft science” into something approaching scientific rigor. The Aarne-Thompson-Uther folktale index is today a codifying or cataloguing tool, with which anthropologists and literature scholars can line up stories based on the motifs found within them-- it is useful for cataloguing tales, making comparative studies, and for trying to trace these stories back through human history to find the One First Story of that type, for instance the ur-story that led to Snow White. When did people first start telling that tale, where, how did it spread, and why are we still telling it today? The danger in using the ATU index is that by stripping a story down to it’s bones, we lose the story, if that makes sense. The beauty of using the ATU index is that you find many, many more interconnected stories. It’s sort of a paradox. Some scholars criticize the ATU, claiming that one could take a random selection of these motifs and shuffle them to create a story and, you sort of could? That’s the beauty of the system. 

So that brings us to Jack. I feel like Jack, as in Jack of all Trades, is anything that the narrative needs him to be. As far as I can find, “Jack” is not a “tale type.” He shows up alongside any number of them-- sometimes as a trickster, sometimes as a hero, almost always as a kind of slippery character. In the first folklore post, I invested many words in exploring Dabb’s obsession with threes-- AU Michael asks three beings what they desire, asks his human victim to guess his name three times, then we follow three sleeper stories, and so on. The original TFW was three people. But Jack makes four. 

What is Jack’s story going to be?

I *think* this will be the last of the longform metas before the end of the series. I mean, I can only hope so. I’ll drop some stuff about individual episodes that might be applicable as I rewatch, and I might clean up my post about Last Call and drop it on here, but I just wanted to kind of hold this up as a mile marker before the Final Seven air.
